As the art of mass persuasion for purchase of a product or a service or simply a way of life, marketing has undergone dramatic changes in a world where digital technology is ubiquitous. With more than half the world's population exposed regularly to some form of online media or other, the digital world has become an important forum for businesses to build their presence in the minds of their customers. Further, digital media is changing the reading and recreation habits of a significant fraction of the educated world, away from the traditional sources of information (and therefore persuasion) such as newspapers, radios, and even televisions. In marketing, it pays to be where the eyes are, and a lot many of them are on the omnipresent social media world of Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, and Instagram. It is a world of visibility which few business holders can afford to miss, but at the same time, having emerged barely a decade ago, social media marketing is still little-understood and explored, causing managers to be intimidated by threats such as data security, online trolls, and negative reviews on public platforms.
