Effectiveness of Structured Teaching Programme Regarding Self Care Management in Relation to Prevention of Complications among Diabetics

The present study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of structured teaching programme regarding self care management in relations to prevention of complications of diabetes mellitus among diabetics. The study was conducted at Adesh hospital and Research Centre and Ashirwaad hospital, Muktsar. The theoretical framework was based on Orem's' theory of self care deficit. Sample consisted of 50 subjects with diabetes mellitus. Convenient sampling was used to recruit the subjects from outpatient department. The structured teaching programme consists of 153 items based on knowledge regarding diabetes and its complications. The baseline data was collected by researcher through structured interview schedule followed by structured teaching and post test at interval of 7 days. Data was analyzed by means of descriptive and inferential statistics. The comparison of the mean scores of pretest 53.1±25.12 and posttest 75.68±25.28 showed that there was significant (p<0.05) improvement in the subjects level of knowledge on self care management in relation to prevention of complication after introduction of structured teaching programme. The increase in knowledge was not only significant in terms of total score but also regarding each category of diabetes and its complication selected for this study. The findings of the study has lead the conclusion that the structured teaching programme was effective in improving the knowledge among the diabetics regarding self care management in relation to prevention of complications of Diabetes mellitus.
