A growing number of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) are receiving home-based care and require support from non-professional healthcare providers, often family members, to manage CKD. Although dialysis is a demanding treatment, which requires considerable personal discipline and care, there is an important role of caregiver for dialysis patients including assistance in daily activities, medication, fluid control, skin care and help to cope with stress. The aim of the study was to assess the knowledge regarding post dialysis home care among caregivers of hemodialysis patients. An exploratory approach was adopted. Total 100 caregivers of hemodialysis patients were taken by non probability purposive sampling technique during the month of February, 2013 in a private Hospital of Mohali. A self administered structured questionnaire was used to assess the knowledge regarding post dialysis home care among caregivers of hemodialysis patients. Collected data was analyzed by descriptive and inferential statistics. The analyzed data revealed that out of 100 caregivers, maximum caregivers were spouse (44%) of hemodialysis patients, majority (38%) were more than 48 years of age, number of female caregivers (54%) were more than male caregivers, majority of caregivers were graduates (47%), unemployed (33%), from nuclear families (67%) and having income equal to and less than Rs 5000 (32%). Among 100 caregivers of hemodialysis patients, no one possessed excellent knowledge, 19% were having good knowledge, half of the caregivers (50%) had average knowledge, 29% had poor knowledge and 2% of the caregivers' knowledge was deemed very poor regarding post dialysis home care. The relation of caregiver with patient, caregivers' age, gender, education, occupation, type of family and income showed no significant impact on the knowledge of caregiver regarding post dialysis home care. Keywords

Sharps injury is a cut or skin penetration caused by medical devices like needles, scalpels and broken ampoules etc .which has been used on a patient. It is important to learn about handling sharps safely to prevent accidental needle stick injury and cuts. Needle stick injuries and other sharp injuries present a major risk for infection with hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and HIV. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and practices of nursing students regarding handling and disposal of sharp items. A quantitative approach with descriptive research design was adopted. With use of convenient sampling technique, 150 nursing students were selected. Structured knowledge questionnaire and checklist were used to collect data on knowledge and practices respectively of nursing students in the month of March-April, 2016. Study findings revealed that the majority 70 (46.7%) subjects were having fair knowledge followed by 67 (44.7%) subjects having good knowledge whereas majority 143 (95.3%) subjects were having good practices. Results shows that there is moderate positive correlation (r= 0.258) between knowledge and practices. Significant association of level of knowledge with age, course, and year of study was found. There was no significant association of level of practices with socio-demographic variables. Keywords

Injection administration is one of the greatest responsibilities of a nurse. It is an integral part of the nurse’s role, therefore the nurses must adapt the principles and techniques of medication administration to render quality nursing care. This study aimed to assess the injection administration practices among staff nurses working in selected hospital and analyzing the practices with current injection administration literature. A quantitative research approach with analytical research design was adopted. 100 staff nurses were selected through non probability convenient sampling technique. Data was collected using observational checklist. Out of 100 staff nurses observed for injection administration, 70 staff nurses administered intravenous injection and 30 staff nurses administered intramuscular injection. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics. Study showed that majority of the staff nurses 28 (93.3%) were having good intramuscular injection administration practices and 36 (51.4%) staff nurses had good intravenous injection administration practices. Study also revealed that there is no significant association of intramuscular and intravenous injection administration practices with age, gender, educational qualification, area of work and work experience. Total 43 literatures were referred for analyzing the findings related to practices of intramuscular and intravenous injection administration. Keywords

The analyzed data revealed that 50.7% nursing students were having poor awareness and 79.3% nursing students were having positive attitude regarding eye donation. There was significant correlation between awareness and attitude among nursing students regarding eye donation. There was significant association of awareness among nursing students regarding eye donation with their age, course, and source of information. Moreover, there was significant association of attitude of nursing students regarding eye donation with their course and religion. Keywords

The end of shift handover is most important ritual at end of nursing shift. Patient handover between nurses at shift change has been an important process in clinical nursing practice, allowing nurses to exchange necessary patient information to ensure continuity of care and patient safety. Handover report increases client safety and satisfaction; creates trust between the nurse and client; reduces communication errors and promotes accountability, teamwork, and respect among staff. The aim of present study is to assess the practices related to end of shift handover among staff nurses working in selected hospitals of District Mohali, Punjab with a view to develop handover giving sheets. A quantitative research approach with descriptive research design was adopted. 100 staff nurses were selected through non probability convenient sampling technique for the study. Practices related to end of shift handover were assessed by observational checklist. Results showed that 33 staff nurses were having fair practices and majority of staff nurses i.e.67 were having good practices related to the end of shift handover. There was significant association of age, area of work and working experiences with practices related to the end of shift handover and no significant association of gender and educational qualification with practices related to the end of shift handover (p<0.05).Keywords

The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of massage with ginger oil on knee pain, knee stiffness and physical functioning among senior citizens residing at selected areas of district Mohali, Punjab. A quantitative research approach with Quasi experimental research design was adopted. 80 senior citizens were selected using convenient sampling technique. Rating scale was used to assess the knee pain, knee stiffness and physical functioning. Result showed that in experimental group, the pre-test mean score of knee pain was 8.425 ± 1.152 and after massage with ginger oil, the post-test mean score was 3.425 ± 0.958. In control group, the pre-test mean score of knee pain was 8.625 ± 1.234 and post-test mean score was 8.750 ± 1.463. In experimental group, the pre-test mean score of knee stiffness was 4.975 ± 0.832, and after massage with ginger oil, the post-test mean score was 2.425 ± 0.675. In control group, the pre-test mean score of knee stiffness was 5.225 ± 0.947 and post-test mean score was 5.300 ± 0.911. In experimental group, the pre-test mean score of physical functioning was 18.325 ± 2.999 and after massage with ginger oil the post-test mean score was 10.875 ± 2.267. In control group, the pre-test mean score of physical functioning was 19.100 ± 3.120 and post-test mean score was 18.975 ± 3.034. There was no significant association of pre-test level of knee pain, knee stiffness and physical functioning with selected socio-demographic variables among senior citizens in experimental and control group i.e. age (in years), weight (in Kg), height (in cm), Body mass index (Kg/m2), gender, marital status, educational status, monthly family income (in Rupees), dietary habits, durations of knee pain, exercise (type of exercise/walking, type of muscle activity during exercise, frequency of exercise in days/week, duration of exercise in a day) and type of treatment. Hence, it has been concluded that ginger oil is effective for reducing knee pain, knee stiffness and impaired physical functioning. Keywords
