Generally phosphates, chromates, nitrites and zinc ions are used as inhibitors in the older days. In order to reduce the usage of these hazardous substances, now a days phosphonates are used as green inhibitors for sustainability of potable water. The need of the hour is to develop formulations free from hazardous materials used in potable water system. In our studies, we developed the formulation which acts as eco - friendly inhibitor. Keywords

The inhibition efficiencies of inhibitor systems constituting various combinations of o-nitrophenol (ONP) and zinc ions in controlling corrosion of carbon steel immersed in ground water for seven days had been evaluated by weight loss method. The nature of the protective film formed on the metal surface has been analysed by FTIR spectra. The protective film was found to consist of Fe2+ - ONP complex. Synergism parameters and Analysis of variance (ANOVA) had been used to evaluate the synergistic effect existing between various inhibitors.

Corrosion rates of carbon steel immersed in various concentrations of Cl- (100 ppm and 150 ppm) have been evaluated by weight loss method in the absence and presence of Amino (trimethylene phosphonic acid) ATMP and Zn2+. It is found that ATMP alone is corrosive at 100 ppm Cl- but at 150 ppm Cl- it shows some inhibition efficiency (IE) due to deposition of Cl- on metal surface. However interestingly, ATMP shows very good IE in the presence of Zn2+ at all concentrations of Cl-. A synergistic effect is noticed between ATMP and Zn2+. The protective film has been analysed by surface analysis techniques and a suitable mechanism of corrosion inhibition is proposed.

Zinc alloy coatings are considered as good substitutes for cadmium coating because cadmium is toxic in nature. Electrodeposition of Zinc-nickel alloy on mild steel is carried out from the electrolytic bath solution containing zinc oxide, sodium hydroxide and Nickel sulphate with EDTA as complexing agent. Plating process parameters such us current density, temperature and bath composition are optimized using galvanostatic electrolysis. The deposit obtained is uniform and semi bright. Zinc-nickel alloy is also electrodeposited from the bath solution containing various concentration of benzaldehyde. The deposits are uniform and bright the composition of nickel in the electrodeposits is studied by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Surface morphology of the deposit is studied by scanning electron microscopy and thickness of the deposit is determined by x-ray diffraction studies. Corrosion resistance measurement is done by tafel and impedance studies. It is observed that current efficiency and corrosion resistance of the zinc nickel alloy deposited specimen with benzaldehyde are greater than the deposited specimen without benzaldehyde. Keywords
