The Toll and the Trade in Poona
Subscribe/Renew Journal
The paper, based on the records in the Peshwa Daftar, tries to present information on some aspects of the toll system as it prevailed in Poona City during the latter half of the 18th century.
Toll was charged on goods and animals moving into the city as well as on those that moved out. It was collected at toll stations round the city. These numbered 15 in 1782-83. The toll rate was ad valorem on animals and by weight in respect of goods. A schedule of such rates is presented.
