Rediscovering our Universities by Increasing their Level of Support

Ramakrishnan points out that a kind of caste system has taken hold of our higher education system in the order: institutes, universities and colleges. Also, it has been briefly mentioned that such a caste system also exists in advanced countries with top-ranking institutions dominating others. In this regard, the present author still remembers the comments of his postdoctoral mentor, late Herbert C. Brown (1979 Chemistry Nobel Laureate, professor at Purdue University, USA) about 'domination of east and west coast institutions in the USA' in a press conference after the announcement of the Chemistry Nobel Prize in October 1979.
