A monospecies bloom of diatom Asterionellopsis glacialis was observed in the coastal waters of Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu, India (12°33'N lat. and 80°11'E long.) during a regular coastal water monitoring programme. The bloom was dense and created brownish-coloured patches near the surf zone (Figure 1).- Foreword
