Development of novel plant disease management strategies requires knowledge of the co-evolution or arms race, affecting phenotypic variations of disease in nature. Advances in understanding genetics of disease resistance and its functional aspects, especially pathogensecreted (elicitors/effectors) and host surveillance (effector targets) molecules, underpin the recognition and specificity in plant–pathogen interactions at the molecular level operating through cellautonomous, multilayered immune system in plants. Seven of the 25 reviews in this volume connect to this theme, demonstrating the significance and expectations from it for better crop improvement. Two of these chapters (Hawes et al. and Deleris et al. – annotated below) even take a step closer in connecting plant and animal immunity systems.References

This volume includes 25 authoritative reviews. The main subjects dealt with are emerging themes, plant immunity, ecological and epidemiological issues, pathophysiology, pathogen biology and disease management. The opening chapter is an autobiographical sketch o f a molecular plant pathologist, Nickolas J. Panopoulos. His research career bloomed in USA during the period when the era o f molecular plant pathology sprouted from developments in recombinant DNA. The personal reflection o f his accomplishments along with the growth o f molecular phytobacteriology have been admirably described. Youngsters can derive inspiration from this presentation.References

The editors have crafted this volume with 28 reviews dealing with cutting edge research themes in plant pathology to mine the latest developments in the background of understanding reached in the past and project the outlook for future research. Themes presented range from emerging issues and new developments to a variety of questions in plant pathology with a bias on biochemical and physiological, molecular, genetic, immunological and cell biological aspects.References
