It is difficult to completely prevent the formation of defects in metal press forming, unless inspecting the entire products. This study suggests an in-process inspection using an ultrasonic measurement in order to avoid such a problem. This method is effective for detecting wrinkles formed in a material during the process. A numerical analysis clarified the relationship between wrinkle shapes and the reflection behaviour of ultrasonic waves. In this study, we developed an experimental apparatus that provided quantitative data explaining the relationship between ultrasonic reflection intensity and the wrinkle shapes. The die of the developed apparatus was in sufficient contact with the specimen machined into the wrinkle shape. The ultrasonic reflection characteristics varied by the wrinkle characteristics.
