Compressive Strength of Mono-Fibre Reinforced Concrete Containing Polypropylene and Sisial Fibres


 

Use of environmental-friendly materials is the gateway for sustainable development. Addition of Polypropylene (PP) fibres to control mix has been proven to be effective in enhancing engineering properties of concrete. However, PP fibres are made from hydrocarbons and its continued usage will not only deplete the natural resources, but also add pollutants to green house effect. An alternative to replace PP fibres with sisal (Agva sisala) fibres has been considered. An Experimental study was conducted to evaluate the performance of sisal fibres in M30 grade concrete as compared to that of PP fibres with respect to compressive strength. Fibre dosages of 0.50%, 1.00%, 1.25% and 1.50% of volume of concrete were added to control mix and compressive strength was evaluated for the ages of 7, 28 and 90 days. Addition of PP and sisal fibres enhanced compressive strength marginally. Furthermore, performance of PP fibre reinforced concrete was found be at par with that of sisal fibre reinforced concrete.
