The present study focuses on the role of Remote Sensing (RS) and geographic information system (GIS) in assessment of forest cover between 1992 and 2012, in Velimalai forest, Kanyakumari district. The trend of forest cover changes over the time span of 20 years was precisely analysed using high resolution satellite data. For this, Landsat5 and LISS-III images from different dates are used. The boundary of the study area was extracted from topo sheet. The forest cover change analysis was prepared by using unsupervised classification with ENVI.
