This paper deals with a systematic design of a Thyristor Controlled Series Compensator (TCSC) based stabilizer and optimally tuned Proportional Integral (PI) controller to enhance the power system stability. The control objective is to enhance the stability and to improve the dynamic response of the Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system operating in different operating conditions and system configurations. Firstly, the design of TCSC based stabilizer is formulated as an optimization problem and Genetic Algorithm (GA) is employed to optimize the stabilizer parameters using Integral Time Absolute Error (ITAE) as objective function. Secondly, an optimally tuned PI controller is designed for TCSC using ITAE as objective function. The proposed control schemes are tested on a weakly connected power system. The damping characteristics of the proposed control schemes are evaluated in terms of eigenvalues and the non-linear simulation results over wide range of loading conditions with various fault disturbances and system configurations. The nonlinear simulation results and eigenvalue analysis show the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed PI controller approach over TSCS based stabilizer.
