Optimization of Turning Operations with Multiple Performance Characteristics Using the Modified Taguchi Method
Subscribe/Renew Journal
This paper presents the methodology of Modified Taguchi optimization method for simultaneous maximization f Surface roughness (Ra), and minimization of machining time and tool wear of Stainless Steel affect the aesthetical aspect of the final product and hence it is essential to select the best combination values of the CNC turning process parameters to minimize as well as maximize the responses. Here the utility concept has been employed for the multi-performance characteristics optimization using Modified Taguchi design. The experiments were carried out on a CNC turning machine, using coated carbide insert for the machining of Stainless Steel. The experiments were carried out as per L18 orthogonal array with each experiment performed under different conditions of such as cutting speed, depth of cut, and feed rate. The analysis of means (ANOM) was performed to determine the optimal levels of the parameters and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) was employed to identify the level of importance of the machining parameters on Surface roughness (Ra), machining time and tool wear.
