With the revolutionary growth in power system and its technological advancements, it is important for dealing with tools for system wide disturbances i.e., widespread catastrophic blackouts in power system networks. The introduction of Phasor Measurement Units (PMU’s) in power systems significantly improves monitoring and performance of power system dynamics. The relative phase position of voltages and currents in different parts of power system determines stability and performance of system. PMU detects the fault in less than a second and provides time synchronised measurements for voltage and current to local Phasor Data Concentrator (PDC). When major disturbance like blackouts occur, necessary protection and control measures is taken against power system degradation, restore the system back to normal state. The operation of PMU is based on frequency domain analysis of equivalent voltage phase angle and equivalent current phase angle at respective buses. This paper describes modelling and performance of phasor measurement unit for two bus system using MATLAB/Simulink.
