This paper implements a high performance controlled AC-DC rectifier using a Single Phase Matrix Converter (SPMC) topology. A combination of two such converters with their output terminals connected in anti-parallel (dual converter) allows operation in all four quadrants. For a closed loop controlled rectifier, the usual Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) has been extended to produce an Active Pulse Width Modulation to correct the pulsating nature of input current. A current wave shaping control loop using the proportional integral control is used in order to maintain the input current waveform sinusoidal, continuous and in phase with the supply voltage. A safe switching sequence is incorporated to avoid voltage and current spikes. The circuit simulations were presented in MATLAB/Simulink to verify the proposed operation.
