In this paper a comprehensive parametric study has been carried out to understand the effects of different microstrip patch antennas and to optimize the performance of the final design. The different patch antennas analyzed are rectangular patch antenna, U shaped patch antenna, T shaped patch antenna and E shaped patch antenna. The theoretical simulations are performed using SONNET software for various substrates. The results are obtained for the different patch antennas and compared with the simulation results. The antenna with lowest voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) is chosen as the antenna for Radio frequency applications such as RFID and GPS.
