This paper reviews limitations of traditional routing protocols used in wired and wireless communication if applied to wireless sensor network. This paper also reviews routing protocols currently used in wireless sensor networks and justifies their inappropriateness for energy constrained wireless sensor node. Wireless Sensor nodes are powered by finite energy batteries which are not easily replaced or recharged. Depletion of these finite energy batteries can result in a change in network topology or in the end of network life itself. Hence, prolonging the lifetime of sensor networks is of interest. Finally this paper presents review of energy aware and energy efficient algorithms for wireless sensor networks.
