Bluetooth has become an extremely popular technology in Wireless Personal Area Networking (WPAN), and is being extensively used for wide range of applications in which the communicating devices are in range of each other, forming a piconet. On the other front, Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANet) are being envisioned to provide a self-configuring network of randomly moving nodes, which would assist each other in increasing the range of the network and giving rise to a whole new set of applications. But a MANet routing system using Bluetooth devices poses a lot of challenges and not sufficient research work is yet available in this regard. In this paper the key challenges involved in Mobile Ad-hoc Networks (MANet) over Bluetooth are analyzed. Also, the characteristics of the Bluetooth technology that can be adopted to address the challenges are described. In addition, a design approach for an efficient mobile ad-hoc routing algorithm for Bluetooth nodes is presented.
