Transmission of voice over Internet is one of the fastest growing applications in last decade. It is a viable alternative to the traditional telephony systems due to its high resource utilization and cost efficiency. VoIP has evolved from a meagre protocol to become the backbone of the next generation communication networks. Meanwhile, Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) has become a ubiquitous networking technology getting deployed throughout the world. Driven by these two popular technologies, Voice over WLAN has been emerging as a powerful infrastructure to provide low-cost wireless voice services. The objective of this research paper is to evaluate the network QoS parameters while using various coding schemes for Voice over IP (VoIP) over 802.11b WLAN in a simulated campus network environment. We evaluated and observed the performance of the various metrics like throughput and packet end-to-end delay for VoIP in a Wi-Fi simulation environment executed on OPNET simulator, where different scenarios were created for finding optimal parameters. Results obtained by simulating these metrics for different encoding schemes (G.711, G.726, G.729, and G.723) for all three multiple access technologies viz. Direct Sequence, Frequency Hopping and Infrared. Certain inferences have been made to suggest the best coding scheme for future data communication applications.Keywords

Wi-Fi provides its users with the liberty of connecting to the Internet from any place without the hassles of plugging in the wires. It is quicker than the conventional modem for accessing information over a large network. This paper presents various performance metrics of WLAN in a simulated office environment for different applications namely FTP, email and web browsing using a Network Simulator Tool, OPNET. Multiple scenarios with varying number of workstations have been created with either one or two access point deployed to cater to the needs of these user workstations. From the simulation model suggested, we concentrate on our efforts to find out metrics namely network delay and throughput by varying numbers of user and data traffic. The results have been simulated by setting different parameters to optimize the performance of this Wi-Fi network. The simulation results show that IEEE 802.11b WLAN is scalable within the reasonable limits of number of users i.e. its performance for different applications like file transfer, email and web browsing doesn’t deteriorate even for increased number of users.Keywords

-The widespread reliance on networking and Internet applications created a need for a technology that provides reasonable speed, access anywhere and a most cost effective solution. We have introduced the OPNETTM network simulation as a primary tool for been taken as reference model. The scenarios implemented include two types of applications (Database and FTP) in two different sites each comprising of 20 users and results indicate that response timeand Task processing time are highly affected by the number of usersper application with and without load balancing.Keywords
