Abstract

A study was carried during 2012-13 at Palampur to investigate the possibilities of semi-hardwood grafting technique in apple under polyhouse. The tongue grafting was performed on four different dates (September 11, 18, 25 and 29, 2012). A success rate of 93.33 to 100% with proper callusing and healing of graft unions was achieved. Among different grafting dates, the plants grafted on September 11 attained the maximum height (25.10 cm) with lateral branching of 2.67 laterals/plant. The minimum plant height of 14.50 cm was recorded in plants grafted on September, 29. Similarly, total number of leaves, dry and fresh weight and chlorophyll content were also more in plants grafted on September 11. This technique needs to be investigated in apple and other temperate fruit plants under polyhouse condition for quick multiplication and reducing nursery production duration.

Abstract

Three micropropagated strawberry cultivars viz. Camarosa, Douglas and Sweet Charlie along with runners of Chandler (multiplied conventionally) were evaluated in a polyhouse at Palampur during 2013-14. The results showed significant variation in vegetative growth, fruit quality and yield parameters due to cultivars. The maximum leaf area (61.59 cm²) was recorded in Camarosa whereas, the minimum (40.99 cm²) in cultivar Sweet Charlie. Runner production and number of leaves per plant were significantly higher in cultivar Camarosa as compared to other cultivars. The yield attributes were also significantly varied among different genotypes. Chandler (7.81) remaining at par with Camarosa (6.80) resulted in significantly higher number of berries per plant. Berries yield was maximum in Camarosa (72.63 q/ha). The qualitative attributes of the fruits like berry size, weight, TSS, acidity and TSS/acid ratio were also significantly varied among cultivars.

Abstract

Almost all the temperate fruit plants are grafted during dormant season or early spring including apple, however, in a preliminary studies carried-out at CSKHPKV, Palampur revealed that apple plants can be grafted during active growing season under protected conditions. Keeping in view, the present study was thus carried out to standardize the different summer grafting dates in apple cultivar Scarlet Gala onto seedling ischolar_mainstocks under polyhouse conditions with the aim to reduce nursery production duration and to ensure the regular supply of plants to the growers. For this study, a tongue grafting was performed during summer months (May, June and July) on different dates. Among various dates, tongue grafting performed on June 12,22 and July 1 gave 100 percent bud take success with proper wound healing of graft unions. The plants grafted on June 12 attained maximum height (71.17 cm) at the end of growing season however; it was statistically at par with plants grafted on June 22 and July 1. Similarly, the number of laterals and ischolar_main length was also found maximum in plants grafted on these dates. The various foliar characteristics of the plants were also significantly affected by grafting dates. The leaf area, fresh and dry weight of leaf and number of leaves per plant were observed maximum in those plants which were having vigorous growth with more number of lateral shoots. In conclusion results showed that tongue grafting performed in second week of June to first week of July is the best time for performing summer grafting in apple under polyhouse conditions in mid hill areas of Himachal Pradesh when both components (scion and ischolar_mainstocks) are in active growing stage. Further, this technique can be applied for quick multiplication of nursery plants of apple for reducing nursery production duration under polyhouse conditions provided the availability of scion wood in mother orchards during grafting operations.

Abstract

Present investigation was carried out for two successive years i.e. 2016-17 and 2017-18 to study the performance of grafted tomato with respect to growth, yield and quality of tomato under polyhouse conditions at Department of Vegetable Science and Floriculture, CSKHPKV, Palampur. Sixteen different ischolar_mainstocks of tomato were grafted with scion cultivar 'GS-600'. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Block Design with three replications and cleft grafting method was used. Plants grafted on ischolar_mainstock LS-89 proved superior to other ischolar_mainstocks for days to first flowering and days to first harvest. For prolonged harvest duration plants grafted on tomato ischolar_mainstock Green Gourd found superior. Higher yield in terms of number of marketable fruits per plant, marketable fruit yield per plant and marketable fruit yield per square metre in were recorded plants grafted on tomato ischolar_mainstock Green Gourd.

Abstract

This study was conducted during 2015-16 with the objective to reduce nursery production duration of plum under polyhouse conditions in mid-hill areas of HP. Non-ischolar_mained cuttings of Pixy plum having graftable thickness were collected from the mother stools in December and then kept in moist sand for two months in a pit. In the last week of January 2016, scion woods of three cultivars of plum namely; Santa Rosa, Mariposa and Frontier were grafted on to the non-ischolar_mained cuttings of Pixy plum. The grafts were then treated with different concentrations of IBA and planted in a well prepared nursery beds under ordinary tunnel type polyhouse. Stentlings (grafted stocks) started sprouting after 12 to 15 days of grafting and grafting success was recorded as high as 90.19% with the production of saleable plants up to 94.19% in cultivar Mariposa treated with IBA at 5000 ppm. The other growth parameters such as stentling height, number of laterals per stentlings, ischolar_main number and ischolar_main length were observed higher in cultivar Frontier. This method of plant propagation reduced the nursery production duration of plum from two years to one year with satisfactory results with respect to bud take success and production of percent saleable plants in polyhouse under mid-hill conditions of HP.
