Abstract

The present investigation was carried out at Palampur during rabi 2012 and 2013 to gather information on the nature of gene action by following line × tester mating design involving five lines and three testers. The analysis of variance revealed significant differences among treatments for days to marketable curd maturity from date of transplanting, gross weight per plant, marketable yield per plant, curd size index, curd depth, curd diameter, per cent marketable curds, stalk length, number of leaves per plant, plant height, harvest index, ascorbic acid content and total soluble solids. The magnitude of dominance variance was higher than additive variance for all the traits except curd depth and total soluble solids which indicated the involvement of nonadditive gene action which could be utilized through the development of hybrids in cauliflower. A complete correspondence was noticed between per cent contribution of line × tester interaction (crosses) and non-additive gene action (σ²D), which reaffirm the importance of hybrids in cauliflower.

Abstract

A study entitled "effect of locally available potting mixture on nursery raising of summer squash (Cucurbita pepo Linn.) under organic conditions" was carried out at Model Organic Farm of the Department of Organic Agriculture, CSK HPKV, Palampur during 2011. Eight different treatments of local organic potting materials were tested for their suitability for growing seedlings of summer squash in thermocol glasses of 150 ml capacity. The treatments were laid out in CRD with three replications. The same set of experiment was repeated thrice over three sowing dates at one month interval under protected structure i.e., 20th January 2011 (first sowing), 22nd February 2011 (second sowing) and 22nd March 2011 ( third sowing) . The pooled analysis over three sowing dates showed that the potting mixture comprising of two parts vermicompost + one part soil+ one part sand+ one fourth part wood ash was found to be the best organic material for growing the seedlings of summer squash. This potting material produced 91.78 percent healthy seedlings for transplanting, which could be easily pulled out with intact ischolar_maining mixture from the thermocol glasses. Small thermocol glasses can be used as an alternative to pro/plug trays or polythene bags as potting base for growing individual seedlings of cucurbits. It can be an affordable, cheaper and easily available technology for nursery raising of cucurbits in the country like India where majority of the farmers are small and marginal.

Abstract

Agriculture in the past is generally considered to be organic by default or tradition, but the modern organic farming combines traditional farming knowledge with different modern agrotechnologies, such as the use of enriched composts, high yielding varieties suitable for growing under organic farming conditions, biofertilizers, green manuring, mulching, bioformulations, crop rotations, mixed cropping with systematic integration of leguminous crops, etc. Organic agriculture in India has a great potential as an important livelihood option for small and marginal farmers looking for low input cost, ecologically sustainable farming in rainfed areas. Besides, various ecological services and other benefits of organic agriculture, the organic crops also suffer less from the attact of insectpests and diseases and give higher profitability. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers, pesticides and water resources have resulted in poor quality of food produced with heavy pesticide residues and overall environmental degradation. Keeping in view the great potential of organic agriculture, there is an urgent need to promote organic farming in the country, which requires strong financial support to the farmers and R&D activities.

Abstract

Bacterial wilt is the most destructive disease in the tropical, subtropical, and temperate regions of the world, causing a heavy economic loss in eggplant. The chemical control of the disease is not effective and the cultivation of bacterial wilt resistant varieties is the only solution to overcome the disease, but cultivated resistant varieties are gradually becoming susceptible to the disease. Thus, an experiment was conducted to screen out twenty F s developed through diallel mating design along with parents viz., Res-1, Res-2, H-8, Arka 1 Nidhi, and Arka Keshav for bacterial wilt resistance under mid-hill conditions of Himachal Pradesh over the seasons. These were categorized according to the Sitaramiah scale (1981) as the observation was recorded on plant survival. The cross combinations were found immune, highly resistant, and moderately resistant to bacterial wilt and can be utilized to develop resistant cultivar(s) through crop improvement.

Abstract

The present investigation comprising of seventeen genotypes was carried out to evaluate the performance of newly developed cytoplasmic male sterile lines of cabbage for various quantitative traits. The analysis of variance revealed that mean squares due to genotypes were significant for all the traits, highlighting the presence of sufficient genetic variability among the CMS lines. Based on the per se performance with respect to marketable head yield and related traits, the best CMS line identified was II-105-CMS (231.48 q/ha) which was statistically at par with other two CMS lines namely II-M-CMS (215.92 q/ha) and III-105-CMS (210.37 q/ha). All these three CMS lines with respect to marketable head yield were also found quite promising in other important horticultural traits and from consumer’s point of view.

Abstract

Heterosis studies were conducted using 9 lines and 3 testers in a line × tester mating design at Vegetable Research Farm, CSK HPKV, Palampur (H.P.) during rainy season 2021. The results revealed HPO-1 × P-8, Kashi Vibhuti × Hisar Unnat, Palam Round × Hisar Unnat and VRO-4 × Hisar Unnat found as promising cross-combinations over better parent for fruit yield. Whereas Palam Round × Hisar Unnat, Kashi Vibhuti × Hisar Unnat and VRO-4 × Hisar Unnat were the top ranking cross-combinations exhibiting significant heterosis over Samrat (standard check 1) and Shakti (standard check 2). Palam Round × Hisar Unnat was identified as best cross-combination as it exhibited significant positive heterosis over both SC1 and SC2 for fruit yield per plant. It also displayed significant positive heterosis over SC1 for nodes per plant, plant height, average fruit weight and fruits per plant and over SC2 for average fruit weight. Hybrid vigour is available for ’ commercial production of okra hybrid and that isolation of pure lines from the progenies of heterotic F s is a 1 possible way to enhance the fruit yield.
