An anatomical and morphometrical study was undertaken on the external and internal nares of 26 Gaddi sheep at Palampur during 2013-15. The results of the study revealed that the nostrils were slit like in Gaddi sheep and situated obliquely at rostral most part of head. The mean length of the nostrils was 2.51±0.52 cm. The mean distance between the dorsal commissures and ventral commissures was 3.26±0.54 cm and 1.04±0.25 cm, respectively. Nasal cavity of sheep extended from external nares to the chonae. The nasal cavity in Gaddi Sheep was provided with the three nasal turbinate bones (choanae) viz. dorsal, ventral and middle. Length of the dorsal turbinates ranged from 10.70 cm to 12.80 cm in adult animal. The width of the dorsal turbinate had range from 1.90 to 2.70 cm with mean length of 2.36±0.40 cm. The length of the ventral nasal turbinate ranged from 9.90 to 12.20 cm, whereas its width was from 2.40 to 3.50 cm.Keywords

Histologically the wall of the trachea and principal bronchi were organized in four layers or tunics: mucosa, submucosa, muscle and tracheal cartilage, and adventitia. The trachea and principal bronchi of Gaddi sheep were lined by pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium containing ciliated cells, basal cells and mucous secreting goblet cells. The mean epithelial thickness of the mucosa was 51.62 ± 0.93 μm. The thickness of the epithelium gradually decreased as we moved posteriorly in trachea. The maximum mean epithelial thickness was recorded at the level of 5th tracheal ring (55.00 ± 1.22 fim) and minimum at 45th tracheal ring (49.56 ± 1.42 μm). The thickness of epithelium further decreased to 42.65 ± 1.62 μm in principal bronchus. Ciliated cells stained moderately for carbohydrates and acidic mucopolysaccharides whereas mildly for proteins. Goblet cells were distributed unevenly amongst these columnar cells. The granules of mucous goblet cells were PAS positive. Basal cells were small, round to ovoid with a centrally located round nucleus. Large numbers of tracheal glands were present in the submucosa, which could be located as deep as 2000fim. The trachea contained cartilages which were roughly 'C shaped pieces of hyaline cartilage that were incomplete dorsally.Keywords

A modified approach to harvest fetal brain along with brainstem in small ruminants was designed. A total of 54 number of Gaddi sheep fetuses were used in the present study. With no marked abnormality, the fetuses were aged between 30 days of gestation until full term. The brain and brainstem was harvested by removal of cranial vault via circular incision around it and cruciform incision along the sutures on its dorsal aspect. The squamous part of occipital bones was removed by wedge shaped incision. The resultant sample can be used for autopsy, neurosurgical, developmental and anatomical studies.Keywords
