Scheduled Castes in India:A Study of Discriminatory Practices in Rural Areas of Punjab

The term discrimination means that differentiating people negatively can do injustice with the people on the basis of caste, sex, colour, creed, religion, language and many more. In this regard social and economic justice, security, equality of status and opportunities, assurance of the individual's dignity are sure by the constitution of India for the entire citizen among other things. The social and economic deprivation among Scheduled Castes had been most common during pre and post-Independence. The constitution of India is enriched with several provisions for schedule caste and schedule tribes to safeguard and promote their cultural, social, educational, economic and political interests in order to bring them in mainstream of the nation. So the present paper attempts to present the socio-economic conditions of the respondents like their sex, income, age, sub-caste, education, religion, marital status, occupation etc besides an overview of the discriminatory practices and other problems in the social life of the Scheduled Castes.
