This paper simplifies the concepts of fiber optic communication, fiber optic sensors and distributed fiber optic sensors with Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA) sensors to present the principles, theory and operation of distributed fiber optic sensors and their applications for non-experts to fathom the principles of the BOTDA sensors.
