Today, the threat to the environment is high on industrial agenda in many countries and there is every reason to believe that it will stay there for a long time to come, although local issues may still temporarily overshadow the long-term impact on the environment as a result of human activity. The World Commission on Environment and Development (WECD) foresaw the possibility for new areas of economic growth, based on policies that sustain the environmental resource base.
