Abstract

The major change in the wireless network standards has attracted researchers to utilize benefits of several data services in various applications. Wireless Mesh Networks which follows 802.11 standards are very best alternative to Local Area Networks and Metropolitan Area Networks. There is a need for better utilization of the 802.11 spectrum in Mesh Networks environment when transmitting data through mesh networks. Recent work shows the increase in utilization of 802.11 spectrum for wireless mesh networks. An effort has been made to design and develop a distributed, self healing, self stabilizing protocol that's assigns channels to mesh nodes in large wireless mesh networks. The efficiency of the protocol is demonstrated with extensive measurements using Qualnet simulator. The distributed channel assignment algorithm improves the capacity of the networks by an average of 25% in comparison to a homogenous channel assignment.

Abstract

Wireless Mesh Networks (WMNs) have gained main attraction in providing flexible network services and support to the end users. There are many efforts seen to design robust routing protocol for WMNs and solutions are proposed to standardized channel allocation techniques. There are various approaches dedicated to maximize the network though put and minimize network interface. Existing multi radio multi channel routing protocols utilize only single channel situation and static channel allocation degrades the performance of the WMNs. The challenge is to allocate channel without link interference and to improve end-to-end throughput efficiency in multipath routing for WMNs. In this paper, we propose a dynamic channel allocation technique is proposed for multi path routing protocol for WMNs. Dynamic channel allocation is used to avoid the inter-flow and intra-flow channel competition and interference. The protocol establishes and maintains multiple channel dimensional disjoint points changing frequently and each data flow is separated into multiple paths. NS2 simulations are carried out for the evaluation of the performance of the proposed channel allocation technique and compared with popular routing protocols of Mesh Networks Ad hoc On Demand Distance Vector Routing Protocol (AODV) and Hybrid Wireless Mesh Protocol (HWMP). The simulation results show that proposed dynamic channel allocation technique achieve better adaptability with less overhead and interference. The multipath routing show increase end-to-end throughput significantly.

Abstract

Adhoc Networks are those Networks which does not require complex configuration. Wireless mesh Networks are also a part of Adhoc Networks. Wireless Mesh Networks have capacity to support Internet Access at fewer expenses for mobile and as well as Stationary Networks. It involves multihopping techniques which involves routers in Wireless Mesh Networks. The main advantage here the geographical area can be increased without any disturbances in the existing Network. In this paper, we propose a Channel Assignment Method which reduces the congestion mechanism and tried to remove all the disadvantages in the earlier mechanism. With this concept, the main focus is given on reducing the packet drop when the network size is increased and maintain the same QoS parameters. As a result when the network size increases the same performances is expected and in turn covering more geographical areas.
