Information Literacy Among the Users in the Faculty of Social Sciences at Jawaharlal Nehru University and University of Delhi

This paper aims to explore the information literacy skills among the users in the Faculty of Social Sciences of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) and University of Delhi (DU). The survey method was used for data collection. A structured questionnaire was designed to recognize the users’ information needs, awareness about different information sources, searching skills, problems in accessing library resources and level of satisfaction with the present Information Literacy (IL) programmes. A total number of 300 and 350 questionnaires were administered among the users in social science faculty of JNU and DU respectively, out of which 233 and 268 completely filled-in questionnaires were selected for analysis with response rate of 77.66% and 76.57% from JNU and DU. The study reveals that a large number of users in JNU and DU were not aware and use of different information sources. Majority of the users in JNU required information for research work while, in DU majority of the users needed information for preparing assignments/projects. The results further reveals that most of the users in both the universities were not having adequate searching skills and majority of them encountered problem in accessing library resources. The study concludes with some suggestions to improve the IL skills of the users in JNU and DU.
