Objective of this paper is development of first principle based model of grate cooler for cement plant. In this work, the temperature variation and assumptions of the model will be discussed. The model is developed for steady state condition. Variations of gas, solid temperature, wall temperature and heat losses through the wall are simulated with respect to grate cooler length. The model is validated by comparing the output with the published experimental simulation data and by observing the response to step changes. Step changes are used for validation and to understand the influence of various design and operating parameters on grate cooler performance.
