Power transmission and distribution can be done either by overhead lines or power cables. Although overhead lines have been most reliable for many years, the deregulation of the electricity supply markets and growing environmental awareness are creating exciting new markets for power transmission solutions based on underground cable technology. Although there are different constructions for high-voltage cable systems this paper only deals with the following essential parts: conductor, semi conductive shielding, insulation and sheathing. This information is provided as a tool which can be utilized by electric utility engineers to improve power system performance.

Abstract

Power transmission and distribution can be done either by overhead lines or power cables. Although overhead lines have been most reliable for many years, the deregulation of the electricity supply markets and growing environmental awareness are creating exciting new markets for power transmission solutions based on underground cable technology. Although there are different constructions for high-voltage cable systems this paper only deals with the following essential parts: conductor, semi conductive shielding, insulation and sheathing. This information is provided as a tool which can be utilized by electric utility engineers to improve power system performance.
