Transfusion of blood and blood components is used in therapy for many decades. It is frequently done on the assumption of the treating doctor that it will be beneficial to the patient. On many occasions this assumption may not be true and not supported by well designed randomised controlled trials. One of the early randomised trials in blood transfusion reported in 19991 was followed by many other randomised controlled trials.
