In the district of Bardhaman, there is a dense forest near Durgapur city, named Garh jungle. Durgapur was founded in the late fifties, by the then Chief Minister of West Bengal, Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Although it is a well-planned industrial city, the forest could manage to preserve its pristinity, at least at the core site because of its impenetrable nature and lack of transport facilities. It is a natural tropical dry deciduous sal (Shorea robusta Gaertn f.)- forest with a more or less undisturbed core.
