The use of medicine originated way back from the time of ancient Civilization. Modern drug design is a complex process based on profound understanding of cellular biochemistry, pathology and synthetic chemistry. The current article presents an overview on medicine from antiquity to new age pharmacology. Here, background of development of antibiotics, antibacterial and antiviral agents and HIV-AIDS related drugs is discussed, with special mention of their synthetic procedures as well as mechanism of actions. This article is a tribute to the great scientific minds behind the discovery of highly successful drugs like Sulfonamides, Acyclovir, Retrovir which have been saving millions of lives.
