Polymers : Boon or Bane?

Today, the pans we cook in, the cars we drive and the toys we play with are made possible by use of polymers, which have made living more convenient and affordable. Polymeric materials, commonly used as plastics, make the backbone of many products that help us learn and grow with ease and comfort. Polymers find place in our furniture and clothes. They help keep our food fresh and safe and our world connected. Polymers are extremely useful In most manufacturing industry. Polymers are used for making tyres and shoes. Everything from windshield wipers to airplane wing fairing can be made from engineered plastics and polymer composites. However, the applications do not stop there. Most recently, scientists have been conducting research on utilizing polymers to facilitate transdermal drug delivery. Most of today's plastics and synthetic polymers are produced from petrochemicals. As conventional plastics are persistent in the environment, improperly disposed plastic materials may turn into a significant source of environmental pollution.
