Lithofacies characterisation of the Miocene Surma sediments in the Barak basin, western Manipur, India: Implications for depositional environment

The depositional environment of the Miocene Surma sediments of the Naga–Manipur hills around Nungba, western Manipur, India have been studied using lithofacies analysis technique. The entire assemblage of the Surma Group (Bhuban Formation) succession has been classified into six different lithofacies types. All these facies are well preserved in five measured vertical profile sections besides lithofacies schemes in respect of the Surma rocks of the study area. Overall intertidal to subtidal environment may be envisaged for the deposition of the Bhuban Formation sediments under the influence of storm processes.
