Abstract
Performance of ball bearings depends on the quantity of lubricant present between the rolling elements. A separating oil film is essential in between the elements of the bearing having relative motion for smooth operation and long life. Effective lubrication enhances working life of the bearing by reducing the friction between balls and races. Absence or paucity of the lubricant film leads to early bearing failure. In the present work, the lubricant film thicknesses for bearings 6207 and 6307 are calculated for variety of lubricants based on formula proposed by Archard and Kirk. The developed formula along with inexpensive measuring instruments can be used for online condition monitoring of rolling element bearings.
