Wireless communication system design has been a topic of intense research since the shift into the digital era in the 1990s. During the same period of time, microelectronic technologies reached new paradigm points as they were going deeper into the sub-micron area. This paper gives an overview of these emerging technologies along with their constraints and enablers, looking through the specific angle of how much this may impact the future of wireless system design. From this end, the paper analyzes the major requirements from the modern digital communication systems, along with the way it is foreseen to evolve, and how it can be mapped onto the microelectronic roadmap.
