Causes of poor pregnancy outcome are complex and deep ischolar_mained in India. When pregnant women at risk do not have adequate access to proper diet and care during the antenatal period, at delivery or post partum, high maternal mortality is inevitable. Nearly 70 per cent of the Indian women of child bearing age reside in rural areas, where facilities for special care is limited. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated significant relationships between serum vitamin A level and biochemical Indicators of Iron status. It is assumed that vitamin A is involved in the regulatoin of iron transport from the llver. It is also believed that vitamin A Improves the haemoglobin level by improving the absorption or utilisation of iron by the bone marrow. Recent studies done at different centres in India have shown a beneficial effect of vitamin A supplementation to pregnant women on haemoglobin values. This is significant. In the context of high prevalence of both anaemia and vitamin A deficiency in pregnant women. Low availability and poor absorption of iron and repeated and closely spaced pregnancies place a constant drain on the iron stores of pregnant women. The increased iron requirement during pregnancy often outstrip the available supply of iron and induce low level of haemoglobin and haematocrit values resulting in decreased oxygen carrying capacity and impairment in foetal growth. Thus iron deficiency anaemia during pregnancy may be on important risk factor contributing to the high incidence of low birth weight.
