Abstract
Anemia, especially due to iron deficiency, is a major public health problem throughout the world, because of high morbidity rate, its effect on work performance and immune function of the afflicted person, and on growth and mental development of the children, and high mortality during pregnancy and childhood. Anemia is also widespread in India and its prevalance is reported to be higher in females than in males and more in infants and children than in adults.
