Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a life threatening condition, which involves progressive, irreversible loss of kidney function. The burden and cost of treatment for chronic kidney disease like lifelong dialysis or renal transplantation could not be affordable by an average Indian family. The study titled "Assess the knowledge regarding the risk factors of chronic kidney diseases among the adult attending AIMS, Kochi" .
Objectives:(1) Identify the level of knowledge regarding risk factors among the adult .(2)Find the association between the level of knowledge with selected demographic variables Methodology: A quantitative approach has been used in the study, with a primary objective to assess the knowledge of adult regarding the risk factors of chronic kidney disease .The study was conducted among 70 subjects who met the eligibility criteria using non probability convenience sampling technique. The data was collected by using structured questionnaire on demographic variables and knowledge. The data analyzed by using descriptive and inferential statistics.
Results: Among 70 adults 21(30%) were 20-40 yrs, 49(70%) were in 41-70 yrs, 55(78.6%) where from urban and 15(21.4%) were from rural area .Out of total, none had good knowledge regarding the risk factors of CKD, but 55(78.6%) had average knowledge and 15 (21.4%) had poor knowledge. Out of the total samples, 81.8 % of urban and 18.2% from rural had average knowledge. The results reveal that there was a significant association between age ( χ2 = 3.636 at 0.1 level of significance) ,education ( χ2 = .681 at 0.5level of significance) and occupation (F test, p value = 0.035) with knowledge regarding risk factors of chronic kidney diseases.
Conclusion: The study revealed the fact that majority of subjects from urban area had average knowledge and there was an association between age and education with knowledge regarding chronic kidney disease, but none have good knowledge. The study necessitates the importance of education and awareness regarding the various risk factors of chronic kidney disease among the population. The prevention of CKD depends upon social and economic factors coupled with individual knowledge and motivation.
