The notion of nested experimental research work explores experimental and control group has handsome unequal samples. The proportion of samples could vary more in controls than experimental subjects. The ratio depends in accordance with the researcher and the usual larger part of the nest serves as controls. This review paper streamlines the guidance, varied types, usage and the limitation of nested experiments. Nurses can adhere this experiment in their research journey as a platform for evidence based practice.Keywords

Context: The intervening role coping plays between stress and quality of life may depend on the types of stress encountered and the types of coping strategies used. Objective: The present study investigated the relationship between stress, coping, and quality of life. Methods: Breast cancer patients recently diagnosed with recurrence (N=38) were assessed shortly after the diagnosis and 3 months later. P. Herschbach Questionnaire on Stress in Cancer Patients (QSC-R23) was used to assess the level of stress. QOL instrument was used to assess quality of life. The Brief COPE was used to assess frequency of engaging in 13 different coping strategies. Researcher taught the emotional coping strategies for all the participants after the pretest. Results: Statistical and clinical significance was found with coping to alleviate stress and improve quality of life among breast cancer patients. Conclusion: The findings imply that interventions teaching coping strategies would be important for patients experiencing high symptom stress and could be important for all patients.Keywords

Context: Nurses can support the breast cancer women well by listening to them, accepting their emotions and informing them in detail. Therewith, they can convey a sense of security to the women and help them to maintain hope and the ability to deal with reality.
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficiency of dose response effect with Emotional support focused nurse directed intervention on serum cortisol among breast cancer survivors.
Methods: 40 breast cancer survivors were checked with serum cortisol before and after the intervention. 20 participants in experimental arm and 20 in control arm were administered with Emotional support focused nurse directed intervention for the period of 30-45 minutes, five times in a week for three months which indicates the larger dose response effect in experimental arm and control arm received the same treatment thrice in a week to indicate the smaller dose response effect.
Results: Comparison of Paired t test value of pre and posttest serum cortisol scores between experimental arm and control arm showed 4.56 and 2.89 respectively which indicates the significance of Emotional support focused nurse directed intervention on serum cortisol.
Conclusion: Larger dose response could be effective than the smaller dose response with only minimal effectiveness for breast cancer survivors.

Context: Caring for a relative with a mental illness can be strenuous such caregivers can even be more burdened. Objectives: To assess the physical health problems among care givers of mentally ill patients and to determine the association between physical health problems and the selected demographic variables. Methods: A descriptive study was conducted among 30 caregivers of mentally ill patients admitted at Government Head Quarters Hospital, Erode. The purposive sampling technique was used to collect the data. The physical health problems among care givers of mentally ill patients were graded into three categories based on check list with dichotomous questions. Structured interview schedule was conducted by recruiting and enrolling the samples under inclusion criteria such as age between 30 and 60 years, both genders. Care givers who stayed temporarily were excluded from the research. Results: Out of 30 care givers of mentally ill patients 10(33.3%) had mild physical health problems, 18(60%) had moderate physical health problems and only 2(6.7%) had severe physical health problems. Association was found only with the occupation (8.99). Conclusion: The study revealed that caregivers of mentally ill patients suffer with physical health problems such as hair loss, muscle and joint pain, headache, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, heart attack, asthma, ulcer and insomnia.Keywords

Context: Nurse led telephone session is an important intervention to bring evidence-based practice and the determination of the efficacy and cost-effectiveness of telephone interventions in improving patient outcomes. Objectives: The purpose of this study was to investigate the efficiency of nurse-led telephone session with patients suffering from breast cancer in Erode Cancer Centre at Erode. Methods: The study samples consisted of 30 patients recruited on the basis of simple random sampling technique with basic true experimental design in which 15 samples received nurse led telephone session and the other 15 samples received standard measures of care. The quality of life was assessed by using QOL instrument -Breast Cancer Patient Version followed by a telephone intervention session in experimental arm whereas control arm received routine ward care. Results: The mean pretest quality of life score in experimental arm showed 136.9 and posttest score showed 138.2. Control arm displayed 135.1mean pretest quality of life scores whereas posttest score was 135. 5. Comparison of Paired t test value of pre and posttest quality of life scores among experimental arm and control arm showed 4.69 and 2.0 respectively. Conclusion: The nurse-led telephone session had only mild positive effect on the quality of life of patients with breast cancer.Keywords

Toxocariasis is asymptomatic as the larvae are unable to reproduce and subsequently die, but local inflammation can lead to distinct syndromes depending on where in the body the larvae reside. In rare cases these larvae may migrate to the central nervous system where they may cause a constellation of neurological symptoms including meningoencephalitis, focal deficits and seizures. The reports of toxocariasis shows causative factor of psychiatric symptoms. Several studies have highlighted the increased seroprevalence of antitoxocara antibodies in psychiatric populations particularly schizophrenia, although it is uncertain whether is a causative effect or secondary to the population’s increased likelihood to behave strangely or be homeless. Recently, there has been interest in the possible association between neurotoxocariasis and an immune-mediated dementia.References

Last observation carried forward is a common statistical approach to the analysis of longitudinal repeated measures data where some follow-up observations may be missing. To accurately estimate the magnitude of treatment efficacy, caution should be observed regarding the LOCF analytical bias. To conciliate with this challenge, several imputation methods have been developed in the literature to handle missing values where the most commonly used are complete case method, mean imputation method, last observation carried forward (LOCF) method and multiple imputation (MI) method. Subsequently after rigorous review, this paper concludes that LOCF method has more bias than the other three methods in most situations.Keywords

Context: Psychomotor retardation is a central feature of depression which includes motor and cognitive impairments. Particularly in an inpatient setting, psychomotor retardation may require increased nursing care to ensure adequate food and fluid intake and sufficient personal care. Methods: After obtaining written informed assent, MDD patients who fulfilled the inclusion criteria were recruited and enrolled in this study at government head quarter’s hospital, Erode. The total sample size was 50 MDD patients. Purposive sampling technique was adopted in this study. This study was operated based on basic true experimental research design. All the subjects were interviewed before intervention by assessing the demographic profile. The level of conation was assessed with Whealen and Speaken - modified work skill rating scale. The joss stick skill training was demonstrated through video, for 15 to 20 minutes, once a day for 15 days. Posttest was conducted by using the same assessment techniques in experimental and control arm. Result: The unpaired ‘t’ test value of conation between experimental arm and control arm depicted statistical significance (t=6.98). The joss stick skill training was statistically significant, by improving the conation among MDD patients.Keywords
