Computer Simulation of Finite Element Analysis of Advanced Filamentary Composites
Subscribe/Renew Journal
Filamentary composites exhibit anisotropic behaviour and pose special problems in the analysis of structures. A finite element model and the corresponding computer simulation are presented here for the study of the behaviour of advanced filamentary composite laminates with or without cutouts under inplane loading. Tlie stiffness characteristics of the plane stress triangular composite elements have been evaluated on a macromechanics principle. Scientific discretization procedure employed are discussed- A description of the finite element computer programme SAHOC (Stress Analysis Programme of Composites) and the associated flow charts are provided. Mesh generation routines and large computer systems developed for solution of discrete element problems are indicated.
Numerical results for the stress distribution around a circular cutout in various glass/epoxy, boron/epoxy and graphite/epoxy composite laminates under inplane uniaxial loading are presented. High stress concentrations in composites as compared to isotropic materials are observed.
