Indian Standards Institution and Welding

Prosperity of any country depends upon the large scale industrialisation of its resources. To develop this industrialisation standardisation is an obvious pre-requisite. Standardisation in our country may be said to have commenced when an Inspector of Local manufacturers was appointed by the Railway Board in 1909 at Calcutta to encourage the purchase of the products of local industries for railways. Soon after a Metallurgical Inspectorate was set up by the Railway Board for the inspection of rails, etc. manufactured by Tata Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. A number of organisations have since grown up, such as Central Standards Office, Directorate General of Supplies, and Disposals, Central Board of Irrigation and Water Power, Indian Roads Congress, etc. On the recommendation of Government of India, the Institution of Engineers (India) acted as an Indian Committee of the British Standards Institution for a long time, but this work was recently transferred to the Indian Standards Institution.
