Features of Mulajore Generating Station
Subscribe/Renew Journal
The supply of electricity to the central district of Calcutta was commenced in 1899 by the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation from a small generating station situated in Emambagh Lane. In those early days, electricity was used almost exclusively for lighting purposes and although the price charged in Calcutta was 8 annas per unit, the demand grew so rapidly that within a few years additional generating stations were laid down in Alipore, Ultadanga and Howrah. Within 10 years the demand for electricity had outgrown the capacity of these four stations, principally due to the popularity of the electric ceiling fan, which was developed about that time, and to industrial load which was growing by leaps and bounds as the result of the introduction of reliable electric motors.
