The process of elongation of hot iron between cylindrical rolls was practiced as early as the seventeenth century. The subsequent development of the modern rolling mill in its many forms, together with the art of controlling the shape of the final product, has largely been the outcome of progressive engineering application to the mechanical construction of mills and their auxiliaries, coupled with the practical experience embodied in the highly specialised and individualistic art of the roll designer.
