Calorific Value of Gas

The maintenance of high calorific value in the gas generated is not of primary importance in stationary practice, steam being introduced to avoid clinkering troubles rather than to improve the quality of the gas. Rennie has shown that the maximum power output of an engine operating on producer gas, is not more than 70% of the output of petrol under the most favourable conditions, unless recourse is made to alteration of the engine or supercharging. The need for generating a gas of high calorific value in mobile units is therefore apparent.
