The use of high strength materials along with higher design stresses and refined methods of design result in slender structural member in reinforced concrete. In these, although strength requirements are met with, service-ability requirements are not, leading to large deformations. Further, with time these deformations increase because of creep and shrinkage of concrete leading to a redistribution of stresses and changes in the extent of cracking.
