Structural loads compressing the underlying soil, tend to deform the soil structure by relatively displacing the soil particles from their original position, or bringing the soil particles closer together, resulting in decrease in the volume of the soil. In case of clayey saturated soil, the change in volume is attributed mainly to the expulsion of water out of the voids of the coheive soil.
