Underpinning is the art of providing new supports or foundations under existing structures necessitating extra strengthening without disturbing or damaging the stability of the existing structures. The process in a nutshell consists in excavation under an existing foundation and building up a new foundation from a lower level to the underside of the existing foundation so that the load may be transferred from the present bearing strata to the deeper one having greater bearing capacity.
