A large number o f stabilised soil road bases have been laid in Tamil Nadu during last two decades. For the pavements with stabilised bases, proper design at the planning stage and field control during laying were undertaken. After a few years of service detailed studies on some of these pavements were undertaken to know about their service or performance aspects. The field control operations and the subsequent performance studies have indicated certain shortfalls to be considered at the design stage itself and also how best local materials like lime and flyash can be used as stabilising agents advantageously. The paper describes these details for four typical cases. The construction details of stabilised bases with the available machinery are also indicated.
