An engineer connected with the development of large cities is concerned with achieving for his designed item a maximum strength for a minimum weight and volume of material at the lowest possible cost. Steel being the most, common material available at a low cost, is the most important engineering material. Beams, rails, corrugated sheets, reinforcing bars for concrete, underground water and gas pipes and of equipment used in the public health engineering, such as, water works, sewage plant, etc. can be mentioned as a few example.
